Your files, and exactly what leaves your Mac

Updated October 3, 2026: Mac, iPhone and iPad now use the same consent-based cloud preparation. There is no separate cloud-processing switch and Mac no longer offers local Digest.

Importing and preparing a book

On Mac, iPhone, and iPad, newly imported books are uploaded for cloud preparation after you agree to AI data processing. There is no separate cloud-processing switch or local Digest option. Temporary uploaded originals are deleted when processing finishes, or within seven days if it cannot complete. Without AI consent, you can read with lightweight local parsing and no cloud-preparation upload. Existing books are not reprocessed automatically.

Cloud preparation includes unpacking the file, recognizing text in scanned pages, and building the index for whole-book discussion. The temporary uploaded original is deleted as soon as preparation finishes, with a seven-day cleanup limit if processing cannot complete. Uploads are private to your account and never used to train models.

The completed reading bundle may include the original so you can read it on your devices. That bundle is kept until you delete the book or account. Account cloud sync is a separate feature with separate controls; disabling sync does not revoke AI consent. See the Privacy Policy for those retention rules.

Reading without AI consent

Without AI data-processing consent, Resage uses lightweight local parsing to let you read. It does not upload the book for cloud preparation or run local Digest. AI discussion and whole-book cloud preparation require consent. Existing books are not automatically uploaded or reprocessed by this change.

Asking an AI question

Resage sends the relevant passages, your question, and relevant reading-memory excerpts to its AI providers to answer you. It does not send the whole book as the discussion prompt. A question about a figure, diagram or table may also send an image of that single page.

Your content is never used to train AI models. Our discussion provider uses API data under the terms described in the Privacy Policy, including its stated abuse-monitoring retention. Server-side raw discussion logs expire after 90 days; this is separate from your reading memory and from your local or account-synced discussion history.

Your reading memory

Reading memory contains your discussions with the AI companion, the passages from your books that those discussions quote, and short notes the AI keeps about you. It is stored with your account so it can follow you across devices, and kept until you clear it, delete the file it came from, or delete your account. In Settings you can turn it off or clear all of it.

Withdrawing consent

You can withdraw AI data-sharing consent in Settings. Withdrawal stops new AI discussions and cloud-preparation uploads. Queued processing and background memory work recheck consent before provider calls and before saving results. A request already sent cannot be recalled. Withdrawal does not delete existing books, discussion history or account data, and account cloud sync has its own permission and controls.

This boundary lets you decide whether to use cloud preparation and AI discussion while continuing to read locally without AI consent. For the full details and deletion controls, read the Privacy Policy.
