How do you export EPUBs and books out of Apple Books on a Mac?
Step-by-step guide to exporting EPUBs and PDFs from Apple Books on macOS, finding hidden container files in Finder, and why sideloaded books disappear in iCloud.
When you drag an EPUB or PDF into Apple Books on macOS, the file seems to vanish into a private container. There is no obvious "Export As" menu item, and right-clicking a book offers no "Save to Disk" option.
If you are moving to another reader, backing up your library, or tired of sideloaded EPUBs disappearing behind iCloud sync errors, here is how to extract your files cleanly on a Mac.
First: DRM purchases vs your own files
Before following these steps, there is one rule that determines whether your file can be read anywhere else:
Books bought from the Apple Books Store are copy-protected (FairPlay DRM). Apple does not allow store-bought .ibooks or protected EPUB files to be exported as readable plain files for other readers. No third-party software can legally open those.
Your own files (sideloaded EPUBs and PDFs) are standard files. Any book you imported yourself — from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, direct publisher purchases, or your own documents — can be extracted completely intact.
Method 1: The direct drag-and-drop (fastest)
For single books or small batches, macOS has a simple drag-and-drop mechanism built into Apple Books:
- Open Apple Books on your Mac.
- Click Library in the sidebar, then select All or Downloaded.
- Click and drag the book cover or list row directly out of the Apple Books window and drop it onto your Desktop or into any folder in Finder.
- macOS immediately creates a clean, independent
.epubor.pdfcopy in that folder.
If dragging directly fails (which can happen if the file is offloaded to iCloud and not cached locally), use Method 2 below.
Method 2: Finding the hidden storage folders in Finder
Apple Books stores local files and iCloud cache documents inside hidden system containers on macOS. You can jump directly to these folders using Finder:
1. Local container storage
- In Finder, press
Cmd + Shift + G(or choose Go → Go to Folder… from the menu). - Paste the following path and press Enter:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books/- Inside, you will find your local
.epuband.pdffiles. Copy (do not cut) the files to your preferred documents or library folder.
(Note: In some macOS versions, legacy library metadata lives under ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iBooksX/Data/Documents/BKLibrary/, but the actual book payloads live in BKAgentService.)
2. iCloud Books storage
If you have iCloud Drive enabled for Books in System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud, your sideloaded books may be stored in Apple's iCloud container instead:
- In Finder, press
Cmd + Shift + G. - Paste this path and press Enter:
~/Library/Mobile Documents/iCloud~com~apple~iBooks/Documents/- Copy the EPUBs and PDFs to a local folder outside the container.
Why Apple Books loses sideloaded EPUBs ("The cloud black box")
A common reason people search for export instructions is frustration with missing books: Apple Books shows a broken cloud download icon, or a sideloaded EPUB seems to vanish entirely after a system update.
This happens because Apple Books links sideloaded files to iCloud Drive's space optimization. When disk space is low, macOS quietly offloads local book copies to iCloud servers, leaving only a cloud placeholder. If the internal SQLite database (BKLibrary) suffers a sync conflict or network stall, the book gets stuck in a download loop or disappears from your library view.
Moving your books out of Apple Books into a standard folder (~/Books/ or a regular directory on your Mac) guarantees that your files remain real, inspectable files that Finder can always find.
What we do not solve: cross-device sync
A clear boundary is essential here: cross-device sync is not what we solve.
If your main goal is seamless real-time syncing between an iPhone, iPad, Mac, and an e-ink reader, moving files out of Apple Books will not give you automatic synchronization.
